Hours later, Noreen pushed her plate away, sighed happily, then reached for her wine glass. She had just finished her second plate of the lasagna Spencer and Chloe had made per her instructions and was now a full and content woman.

“I think,” she mumbled into her wine glass. She took a sip as the others looked at her, and with a grin, she continued, “I think, Chloe, from now on, you’re in charge of making the lasagna.”

“Only if Spencer makes the sauce,” Chloe said cheekily as she grinned at Spencer. “He was the one that made the sauce, if. If I recall correctly, I only got the ingredients and handed them to him as he added them. This was awesome.”

“Thank you,” Spencer took his praise and saluted the two with his own glass of wine. “I only have one question for you.”

“What’s that?”

“Do you make that homemade sauce just for the lasagna? Or do you do it for all your pasta dishes?”

“Usually, I only do it for the lasagna, and I only cook that dish when I have time.”

“We need to bottle that sauce,” Chloe said as she began stacking the dishes. She had the forethought while she and Spencer had been cooking to clean as they went, so the only dishes they had to clean now were the ones they ate off of.

“It would go bad before we could use it,” Noreen said as she settled back into her seat.

“No, it wouldn’t,” Spencer said from his position at the sink, filling it with hot soapy water. “There is a way to do it. I’d have to call my mother and ask her, but while I was growing up, Mom was forever putting things in jars to preserve them. We had a huge garden, and I think what she did was called canning.”

“It is,” Chloe said as she looked up from her phone and showed her mother. “There’s even a YouTube video on how to do it.”

Noreen took the phone with a laugh, then watched the video as the other two cleaned up. She handed the phone back, and when Spencer asked if she wanted more wine, she declined. Once the kitchen was put back to rights, they gravitated toward the living room. Noreen and Spencer sat side by side on the sofa while Chloe sat across the room. It was several minutes before any of them spoke.

“Chloe, could I ask you something?” Spencer asked, and when Chloe turned her whole attention on him, he knew he would get a straight answer.

“Sure, what’s up?”

“Friday, after I got back to my office from the assembly, a few hours later, Brandi’s father came storming in demanding whom the pervert was that taped his daughter in a compromising position.”

“Let me guess, Brandi told her father that to try to get you into trouble?”

“I think so, and I also think she tried to get that video I took back so her parents wouldn’t know what she did.”

“It’s just her father. Her mother left last year.
